Mailing List Tips

The following are tips for using the mailing list:

  1. If you are subscribed to the list and send an email to TC87@xmllegal.org, then everyone on the list will receive your email.

  2. When you send to the list, you will receive your own email. If you do not receive your email, then no one else received it. Wait about ten minutes. If nothing happens, please see tips 8 and 9. If these tips do not help, please send Todd an email.

  3. When you receive an email from someone through the list, it will appear to come from that person (their name will be included in the email as the sender). In most email programs, if you click the "reply to" button on an email sent through the mailing list, the reply will go to everyone on the mailing list, not just to the original sender. This could cause you embarrassment if you think you are replying privately to the sender, but instead the email is sent to the entire list. In sum, if you mean to send a private email in reply to a post to the list, please make sure you verify the "to" address before you click send. (Or, click "forward" and then enter the intended recipient's email.)

  4. As of March 2007, there are around 100 post to the list per day. You may want to avoid using a work email or see tip 10 about receiving a digest. Please see your other options.

  5. Many people are sending a summary of their lives over the last 20 years (including pictures). We are working to compile these biographies so that you can read (and see) the biographies of everyone who has already posted. Also, the mailing list has an archive, so you can sift through the email if you like. To help people sort email, when you send your bio and pictures to the mailing list, please include the following text (exactly) in the subject of your email - Bio and Pictures.

  6. As of March 2007, when you first post to the list, Jim Kruspe will welcome you and tell you how he remembers you. If Kruspe does not send you a welcome, you have grounds to complain. If you complain, Kruspe is usually very responsive (on his non-golf days) and will send you an extra-special welcome. Thankfully, Kruspe is still Kruspe.

  7. If you are subscribed with a personal account, for example a Yahoo account, but you try to send an email from your work account, then your email will not be delivered. You can be subscribed with more than one email address, in which case you can send and receive emails at both email accounts. Please let Todd know both of your email addresses.

  8. When you reply to a message, some email clients include the text of the email header from the previous email. In some cases, the mailing list software interprets the additional email header as two email headers, which then causes it to reject the post to the list. If this happens, delete any text that looks like an email header and then resend your email to the list.

  9. The mailing list software has a built-in spam feature that puts a hold on list distribution after 50 emails have been sent in a day. If this happens, the mailing list will send you an automated response telling you that the number of posts has been exceeded. In this case, do not re-send your email. When the list is "freed", your email will post to the list.

  10. This list is available in digest form. A digest is a single email, once a week, the sends all email for that week. If you wish to receive the digested version of the postings, please send an email to LISTSERV@XMLLEGAL.ORG with the text SET TC87@xmllegal.org DIGEST in the subject and the body of the email or see your other options and contact Todd.

  11. If you would like to leave the list, please send an email to LISTSERV@XMLLEGAL.ORG with the text SIGNOFF TC87 in the subject and the body of the email or contact Todd.

  12. If your name is incorrect, please contact Todd.

  13. If you are concerned about the privacy of your email, please contact Todd.

Contact Todd Vincent (Todd.Vincent@xmllegal.org) for assistance with the mailing list.
